Can. 212 §3 They have the right, indeed at times the duty, in keeping with their knowledge, competence and position, to manifest to the sacred Pastors their views on matters which concern the good of the Church. They have the right also to make their views known to others of Christ's faithful, but in doing so they must always respect the integrity of faith and morals, show due reverence to the Pastors and take into account both the common good and the dignity of individuals.
Can. 215 Christ's faithful may freely establish and direct associations which serve charitable or pious purposes or which foster the Christian vocation in the world, and they may hold meetings to pursue these purposes by common effort.
Before there was a United Parishes, there were a few brave folks in Kirby, Salem, Toledo, and elsewhere who knew that closure would create more problems than it solved. In the Spring of 2005, folks from Kirby, Salem, and Toledo organized parishioners from churches all over the 19 county diocese to discuss their concerns about closure.
At the time, St. James was engaged in a 24/7 prayer vigil, and meeting attendees in Kirby agreed to come to Kansas for a follow up meeting that would begin with a prayer service. Members of closing or threatened parishes were welcome and encouraged to attend. The group formally organized as United Parishes; which under the motto "Together We Can," works together to constructively oppose church closings.
United Parishes meets monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Kansas United Methodist Church. All are welcome to attend.
